Use Disk Utility to erase (format) your Intel-based Mac computer's built-in disk (or SSD). These instructions apply only to Mac computers with an Intel processor. Erasing your Mac permanently deletes all of its files, so make sure that you make a backup of any files that you want to keep. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size. However, I'm going to show you how to avoid this one simple mistake that so many of us make when installing a new SSD. By default, Mac OS, unlike Windows, doesn't automatically enable the TRIM.
The SSD drive comes unformatted. The reason for this is that the SSD drive can be used on a variety of platforms (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Unix, etc.) that may employ different file systems (NTFS, HFS+, Ext3, Ext4, etc.) You will need to partition and format the drive for use on your system so that it can be mounted as a usable storage volume on your system.
SSD for use as Primary drive
If you plan to use it as the primary drive for the computer, you may need to obtain a data migration software that is supported on your operating system version, whether that is Windows 7, 8 or 10, or Mac OS X v??.??. To migrate the OS and data from your existing primary drive to the SSD, you may also need additional equipment to connect the SSD to your computer (such as a USB 3.0 2.5-inch external drive enclosure) in order to copy the current primary drive to the SSD. The data migration software will take care of the partitioning and formatting of the drive during the data migration process.
SSD for use as Secondary drive

If your operating system is not listed above, try an Internet query using your preferred search engine to search for 'partition' + the name of your operating system version.
These instructions apply only to Mac computers with an Intel processor.

Your built-in startup disk should be the first item listed in the Disk Utility sidebar. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name. If you don't see it there, choose Apple menu > Shut Down, then unplug all nonessential devices from your Mac and try again.
